Sheffield Public Enquiry Office: information and tips

Sheffield Public Enquiry Office is situated on Millsands, along the river Don. The full address is Vulcan House, Riverside entrance, 6 Millsands, Sheffield S3 8NU.

The opening hours are 8.30am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, except bank holidays. Appointment times are from 9am to 3.30pm. Doors close at 4pm, but applications made before this time will be processed on the same day.

Sheffield PEO is easily accessible from the train and bus stations, taking around 15 minutes to walk, or a 5 minute taxi ride which should cost no more than £5. You could catch bus no 20, 73, 75, 97, 98, alighting at The Wicker. This journey will cost £1.30.

If you wish to drive, there are two parking options. Nearby on street parking is limited to two hours. Alternatively there is a multi-story car park, with details available here.

Facilities at Sheffield PEO include toilets, baby changing & feeding area, a multi-faith room, a vending machine selling cold drinks, sweets & crisps. Drinking water is provided free of charge. There is a TV which shows BBC news; however staff will change the channel to CBeebies if you request this!

When you enter the building you will go through security checks, your bags will be scanned and you will have to walk through a metal detector. They will ask you to remove your coat and belt, but not your shoes. You will be asked to remove any sharp items such as scissors, nail files or flammable materials such as lighters & perfume. You will be asked to leave them with security staff to collect on your way out. You will also be asked to open the cover of your mobile phone to check for concealed weapons. It is not permissible to use a mobile phone inside the building; there are pay phones available if you require them.

At times there can be queues to enter the building and therefore it is a good idea to bring warm clothing or sun hats for the children.

It is allowable to leave the building and re-enter which can be useful if children are getting restless. There is a nice walk along the river, and if you cross over the bridge and walk onto The Wicker, there are shops, restaurants, a chemist and an internet cafe.

Staff at Sheffield PEO are extremely helpful and polite, and overall the experience should be enjoyable for you.

If you have a few hours between your biometric appointment and a decision being made on your application, you may wish to explore Sheffield a little.
